Hello friends,
In the last issue, I wrote about my new role as a Content Strategist. It’s been equal parts exciting and scary. I took a while to settle in. And as soon as I thought I got a hold of things, the rug got pulled out from underneath me.
As much as I knew about creating content, there was plenty I didn't know about how an agency worked. The realisation came when I got assigned to my first pitch.
It was a rush job. We had to conceptualise, build and present the pitch deck within a week of receiving the brief.
We decided to huddle online and talk it through. I was excited! My first pitch! Time to make an impact, to show my value. As we talked through ideas and content types, I started to feel like I turned up at the wrong party.
I knew I was playing football, but people kept telling me I was playing soccer.
It was weird.
What I knew about content was the same, yet, that knowledge didn't feel applicable.
Just like how in both football and soccer, the pitch is still green. The ball is still round. The rules are the same. It was the same sport but played in a different style.
I didn't know what to make of the experience. Ideas I proposed got relegated due to cost or it not being industry practice.
The team was more experienced than me. But their experience seemed like a limiter to creativity rather than a liberator.
Since then, instances of similar experiences have been popping up. Which got me thinking: Is this part of the job? Have you encountered something similar?
If so, what would you do?
